TRAIN - How to Become a Sport Psychologist in the UK

Sport Psychology Career Pathways in the UK
There are two main routes to becoming a UK-registered sport psychologist: the BPS QSEP pathway and the BASES SEPAR pathway. Both lead to HCPC registration, but each has unique requirements and processes.

BPS QSEP Route

What is BPS QSEP?
The BPS QSEP (Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology) is a structured, professional program recognized in the UK for sport psychology practice.

Entry Requirements for BPS QSEP
Candidates typically need a relevant degree in psychology or sport science, along with supervised experience in applied settings.

Supervised Practice and HCPC Registration
Completion of BPS QSEP, combined with supervised practice, allows you to register with the HCPC as a Sport & Exercise Psychologist.

CASES SEPAR Route

What is CASES SEPAR?
The CASES Sport & Exercise Psychology Accreditation Route (SEPAR) pathway is an alternative route for those focusing on applied sport psychology practice.

Eligibility and Training Stages
You must meet specific academic criteria and complete supervised placements to gain registration via SEPAR.

HCPC Registration via SEPAR
Successfully completing SEPAR allows you to apply for HCPC registration, enabling you to practice as a Sport & Exercise Psychologist in the UK.

Choosing the Right Pathway
Both BPS QSEP and BASES SEPAR offer pathways to HCPC registration. Your choice may depend on career goals, preferred supervision style, and professional focus.
